Bilingual Education or English only?

At the national level, the opposition to bilingual education has taken the form of a movement known as English only. The call for instruction in only the English language is heard in every state. The case is obvious. English has always been our common language to learn it as foreign language in Colombia. but the most important factor is that English should be considered as Spanish Language in the term of bilingulism. It is clear that the word bilingual talks about two languages. In our society Spanish as the first language should be considered as important as the foreign one. It is sad if we always think our students should learn English and talk, but their first language has not been considered as important as English.

As a matter of fact, to be bilingual never means that our first language should be ignored. By experience, I can state that if our young students be rich in Spanish in completely learning a foreign language can not be so complicated. On the contrary, it should be very easy to learn it. In this case the education society has a very essencial role to guide the teachers and the professors of the universities to be aware of their responsibility in front of the society. I hope all my colleagues come to this point of view in a near future that Spanish is the identity of our society that depends to ourselves.
